Official, Julián Álvarez will be a Barça player: this is all the money they'll pay

Barça's sports management is already planning for Julián Álvarez's arrival, and Laporta insists on signing him

In FC Barcelona's offices, preparations are already underway for a gradual renewal of the first team's offensive line. Although Robert Lewandowski is still the top scorer for the culé side, the board is aware that his cycle at the elite level of Europe is nearing its end. With a contract until 2026 and 37 years old on the horizon, the Pole will face his last season as an undisputed starter, while the club is already working on his long-term successor.

The need to find his heir has accelerated internal discussions. Joan Laporta and Deco want to avoid a gap in the center of the attack and are looking for a profile that can lead a new sporting era. Among the options considered, there is one name that stands out above the rest for his youth and potential, and that is Julián Álvarez.

Joan Laporta's plan

The blaugrana president has a very clear roadmap: to make Julián Álvarez his major sporting and electoral bet for 2026. The Argentine forward has shined in his first season with Atlético de Madrid, where he has established himself as one of the most important revelations in La Liga. With 17 goals in his first campaign as a colchonero, his name has started to gain momentum in the offices at Camp Nou.

Laporta wants to launch the offensive right when his reelection is at stake, presenting the former River player as Robert Lewandowski's natural successor. It would be a strategic move both in footballing and symbolic terms. A high-impact signing, with potential and international experience, ideal to lead the club's new era under Hansi Flick's direction.

Footballing fit, economic challenge

From a tactical point of view, Julián Álvarez fits perfectly with what Barça are looking for. He is versatile, hard-working, technical, and capable of playing in several offensive roles. His ability to move between the lines and his constant pressing make him a profile very much to Flick's liking, who wants a forward who participates frequently and can score goals.

The main obstacle is his price. His release clause with Atlético is around €120 million, a figure that currently seems unattainable for Barça without extraordinary income. However, the two-year planning horizon allows for the possibility of a different economic context, with room to maneuver if the financial restructuring goals Laporta has in mind are achieved.
