The Dutch midfielder must make a vital decision after a new ultimatum from Barça

FC Barcelona faces a crucial summer in which they must not only sign players but also make decisions regarding some of their most important players.  Among them is Frenkie de Jong, a footballer who arrived in 2019 with the label of a star, but whose trajectory at the Catalan club has been very irregular. His talent is undeniable, but between injuries, tactical doubts, and lack of consistency, he never managed to establish himself as the midfield beacon that many desired with his brilliant arrival.

However,  all that changed with the arrival of Hansi Flick, who reignited his spark. From the very beginning, the German coach made it very clear that he counts on Frenkie, and the player replied with more solid performance and greater prominence on the field. But his contractual situation remains a headache for the sports management at Barça, which has already made a decision: renewal or sale, with no room for half measures.

Renewal underway

After months of tension and frozen stances, it seems that Frenkie de Jong's future is about to be defined. The Dutchman has taken the step that was desired: accepting FC Barcelona's conditions to renew his contract with the Catalan club. Conversations between his entourage and Deco have progressed rapidly in recent weeks, and everything indicates that the official announcement could come sooner rather than later.

This decision comes after a clear ultimatum from Joan Laporta. The president did not want to repeat past mistakes and lose a valuable player without leaving money in the coffers. Therefore, a deadline was set: if he did not renew before the summer market, the club would put him on the transferable list.

Second stage to prove himself

Frenkie de Jong, finally, chose to stay at Barça, convinced by the new project and the role promised to him in the team. With the renewal almost closed, a new stage opens for the Dutchman at Camp Nou. Now he seems to have the full trust of the coach and a game plan in which he fits much better.

In this second opportunity, Frenkie wants to leave doubts behind, win the fans' affection, and become the dominant player he was at Ajax some time ago. For Barça, this continuity represents a victory on several levels: it avoids a forced sale and keeps a high-quality midfielder. From now on, Frenkie will have to prove that his commitment goes beyond a signature, and that he is ready to lead.
