The start of the season at Barça has left several certainties and also some questions regarding the formation of the starting eleven. One of the issues that has caused the most debate has to do with the center-back position, where Christensen was expected to take advantage of Íñigo Martínez's departure to Al-Nassr. However, the situation has been different than expected and the Dane hasn't managed to establish himself in Hansi Flick's plans.
The German coach has shown full trust in Ronald Araújo, who has started the season at a very solid level alongside the young Pau Cubarsí. In the Joan Gamper Trophy and in the first matchday of La Liga, both provided security and understanding, managing to keep the goal at zero. Christensen, meanwhile, has seen his role reduced to the bench.
Christensen's future in doubt
The situation of the Danish center-back reflects a lack of trust from the coach and, as a result, a loss of prominence within the team. The imminent registration of Gerard Martín, along with the growth of talents such as Andrés Cuenca or Álvaro Cortés, further increases the competition in the back line. With this scenario, Barça hasn't made progress in talks for a contract renewal, and his contract expires in 2026.
In this context, the board is seriously considering his departure in the next winter transfer window. Christensen still has a market in Europe and clubs such as AC Milan have shown interest with offers close to €20 million. For Barça, letting him go in January would make economic sense: they would avoid a free transfer in two years and would have liquidity to strengthen a position considered key.
Flick has a new target
The possible departure of Christensen isn't seen as a weakness, but as an opportunity to reshape the defense. Hansi Flick has conveyed to Joan Laporta and Deco his desire to bring in a specialist for the position, someone who can provide immediate guarantees and increase internal competition. Ibrahima Konaté fits that profile, current Liverpool player, who has already expressed his desire to leave Anfield after not renewing his contract.
The French center-back is considered by the Barça coaching staff as a top-level option. His physical strength, his reliability in aerial play, and his experience in top-level competitions make him an ideal candidate to strengthen the Barça back line. Laporta and Deco see him as a strategic reinforcement capable of raising the defensive level and consolidating a more solid block for the coming years at Barça.
