The competition for the goalkeeper position at Barcelona has intensified during the start of the season. With Ter Stegen's injury and the new additions in goal, Hansi Flick has made it clear to Joan García and Szczesny that there's no room for error. In this context, Iñaki Peña has seen how he's been relegated to the background at the Catalan club, just as his opportunities have drastically decreased.
The Alicante-born goalkeeper, who gained prominence due to the German's injury, knew how to take advantage of that opportunity to show security and maturity. His performances against strong opponents, including Real Madrid, allowed him to earn the respect of the locker room and the fans. However, that stage is now behind him. His current situation is very different from what he experienced then.
Deteriorated relationship at the club
The origin of this loss of prominence lies in the relationship between Iñaki Peña and Flick. The German coach wasn't satisfied with certain behaviors from the goalkeeper, such as some delays, which led to an obvious sporting punishment. Since then, the Alicante-born player has been relegated to the last spot in the goalkeeper rotation, even after having shown an acceptable performance on the field.
The arrival of Joan García and the contract renewal of Wojciech Szczesny ended up closing any doors. Flick was clear with Peña during the preseason: he didn't count on him in the medium or long term. From that moment, Joan Laporta and Deco started working on an exit, although for weeks no firm offers arrived.
The uncertainty dragged on, raising doubts about what his final destination would be.
Elche bet on him
That question was solved in recent days: Elche CF reached an agreement with Barça to bring in the Alicante-born goalkeeper. The deal was closed as a loan with a purchase option, a formula that satisfies all parties. This way, Elche strengthens its goal, while Peña will have the chance to feel like a protagonist again in a different environment.
Before making the temporary transfer official, Peña extended his contract for one more season with Barça. His current contract was set to end in 2026, and the board didn't want to risk losing him in case the purchase option isn't activated. This way, the club ensures a possible return or future financial benefit, while the goalkeeper seeks to establish himself in a new challenge.
