U-turn in Eric García's future at Barça: the latest offer changed everything

The German coach has been clear with the club's sporting management and has asked them to renew his contract at all costs

In a season marked by injuries and constant tactical adjustments, Hansi Flick has shown the ability to adapt quickly to setbacks. The German coach, since his arrival at FC Barcelona, has had to manage unforeseen situations that have affected his planning. Some of the decisions that seemed firm in the summer have taken an unexpected turn as the months have passed, making it clear that everything can change within weeks.

One of those situations had to do with the distribution of minutes in the defensive line. The long-term absences of Ronald Araújo and Christensen forced the coaching staff to reconsider the use of some footballers who, in principle, weren't in the main plans. Those unforeseen events, far from being a problem, opened a window of opportunity for some names who had been relegated to obscurity.

Earns a place in the defense

One of the clearest examples has been Eric García. The Catalan defender, who last summer had been included on the transfer list by the culé club, ended up becoming a very useful piece for Flick. His continued presence in the squad was initially due to the urgency caused by injuries, but over time he earned minutes and prominence thanks to his performance.

During the first part of the season, Eric delivered a convincing level and took on unexpected roles. Specifically, his unexpected appearance as a right back—a position in which he had hardly played in his career—was key to covering for Jules Koundé's absence. Flick used him in high-stakes matches, and the defender replied with professionalism, consistency, and tactical solidity.

That made Barça halt any negotiations to sell him, despite interest from clubs such as Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Girona, or Villarreal.

Change of plans, renewal on the way

At the beginning of 2025, both Joan Laporta and Deco were considering transfer options for Eric García for amounts around €10 million. The player was also mentally prepared to look for a new destination at the end of the campaign, aiming to have more continuity. However, his growth throughout the season made that scenario change drastically.

Flick, convinced of his usefulness, has requested that the club ensure his continuity. He considers Eric García a valuable piece because of his versatility, his willingness to adapt to different situations, and his constant commitment, even when he doesn't have a leading role. With a contract until 2026, Barça is already working on an extension that will reward his development and give him stability for the future.
