From starter to not playing anymore: Flick confesses he wants him out of Barça

The German coach has delivered a very unexpected message by revealing his intentions with this player

FC Barcelona has always been a club where domestic competition is fierce. From La Masia to the first team, every player must prove their worth day after day.

The arrival of Hans-Dieter Flick has reinforced this philosophy, with a focus on immediate performance and meritocracy. However, this mentality has also led to difficult decisions, leaving some players out of the German coach's plans.

One of the most striking cases is that of a footballer who, after a promising start, has been relegated to a secondary role. Despite having opportunities and showing an acceptable level, Flick's decision is clear: He no longer counts on him, and his future at the club is practically sealed.

A season of changes at Barça

Barça has experienced a season full of changes.  Since Flick's arrival, the team has undergone a restructuring in several positions. The fight for a starting position has been intense in all areas of the field and the goalkeeping position has been no different.

During the first weeks, the German coach opted for an internal solution while waiting for a reliable reinforcement. The affected player took advantage of his opportunity, delivering good performances and dispelling some doubts about his ability to compete at the highest level. However, his performance was not enough to convince Flick, who opted for a new goalkeeper with more experience in European competitions.

The competition for the position has been tough, but the coach has already made a definitive decision. The footballer has gone from being a valid option to being completely ruled out.

Flick imposes his criteria

The Spanish Super Cup match marked a turning point. Although the player had had outstanding performance, an off-field detail ended up sealing his fate.  From that moment on, Flick found the determination to trust the new signing, relegating the affected player to the bench permanently.

Despite having been key in some matches and showing commitment to the team, the coach has made it clear that he will not play again except in an emergency situation.  This stance has caused surprise, as until recently the footballer was a valid option for the starting position.

The player himself has shown frustration with the situation. He believes he has worked hard to earn a place on the team, but he understands that the coaching staff's decisions are final. His close circles have already begun exploring possible destinations for next season, as staying at Barça without playing time is not an option.

The future of the discarded player

Flick's decision has opened a new scenario for the player. His future seems to be far from Camp Nou, and everything points to his seeking a new team next transfer market. Clubs from LaLiga and other European leagues have shown interest in acquiring his services; his departure seems a matter of time.

Meanwhile, Barça sees his sale favorably, as it would allow them to free up salary mass and continue Flick's project with players who fit into his scheme. Additionally, the club understands that retaining a player who will not have playing time would only generate unnecessary tensions in the locker room.

The player in question is Iñaki Peña. The Alicante goalkeeper has gone from being a reliable alternative to being completely ruled out by Flick. Despite having replied well when given the opportunity, the arrival of Wojciech Szczęsny has completely changed his situation.

Peña has been relegated to the bench and will not play again except in extreme cases. With a contract until 2026, his future seems to be outside Barça. Clubs from the Premier League and LaLiga have already inquired about him, and his departure by summer is almost certain.
