Luis Enrique kicked him out of Barça and now Laporta will pay €40M for his return: 'Necessary'

The blaugrana side is looking for a left-back to compete with its homegrown player ahead of this transfer window

Gerard Martín has been one of Barça's pleasant surprises this season. The left-back, who is 23 years old, has had a very complete season under Hansi Flick's orders. His performance hasn't gone unnoticed by several European teams and now, two Premier League clubs have put concrete offers on the table to secure his services.

These are Bournemouth and Wolverhampton, two teams that have been following the Catalan footballer's progress for months. Both clubs see Gerard as a full-back with great range, good decision-making with the ball, and enough potential to establish himself at the top level. According to Carpetas blaugranas, the offers have already reached the player's camp, who is currently considering all available options.

The Catalan defender, whose contract ends in June 2025 (junio de 2025), is open to making the leap to professional soccer. However, he hasn't made a final decision yet. His priority is to find a destination where he can get playing time and keep growing. Meanwhile, Barça is aware that it'll be very difficult to keep him if strong financial offers arrive from England.

Gerard Martín hesitates to leave

The blaugrana club is already working on several scenarios, including a possible immediate departure, Gerard Martín is willing to listen to Barça, but he also wants sporting guarantees. That's where the Premier League could make the difference. The two British clubs are willing to offer him a long-term contract and a spot in the first-team dynamic, something Barça can't promise him right now.

From the offices of the blaugrana club, they already assume that losing Gerard Martín this summer is a very real possibility. In that context, the technical department has started to move. In recent hours, a very familiar name for the culé fans has resurfaced: Alejandro Grimaldo. The current Bayer Leverkusen player is highly regarded by Deco and also by Hansi Flick.

A reliable replacement

Left-back Alejandro Grimaldo has been one of the key pieces in Xabi Alonso's championship team. His level has been spectacular both in the Bundesliga and in Europe. His offensive profile, his ability to create numerical superiority on the wing, and his great ball-striking make him a very attractive option to strengthen the left flank. At Barça, they believe he could be the ideal replacement if Gerard Martín ultimately doesn't stay.

The main problem with Grimaldo  remains financial. He has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027 (2027), and his market value keeps rising. Nevertheless, the player would welcome a return to Camp Nou. He left the club very young and is attracted by the idea of having a second spell as a blaugrana, now as an established footballer.

Gerard Martín is still waiting, Bournemouth and Wolves are pushing, FC Barcelona, meanwhile, is already preparing in case it is forced to sign a new left-back. A busy summer is coming at Can Barça.
