FC Barcelona is experiencing a period of stability in midfield after several inconsistent years, and it's thanks to Frenkie De Jong's return to his best form. The Dutch midfielder has gained prominence since Hansi Flick arrived on the Barça bench, and his influence has been evident both in defense and in building out from the back. It's no wonder: with him on the field, the team flows more naturally and that has been proven.
His impact has been such that, even though his contract ends in 2026, Joan Laporta is already working to renew his contract. The club's intention is to tie him down for the long term, although if there's no agreement, they don't rule out forcing his departure this very summer. For now, the German coach's desire is clear: Flick wants De Jong as a key piece of the new sports project.
The market responds
However, this resurgence of Frenkie has had unexpected consequences. For months, Barça had made signing a top-level pivot a priority, and the big favorite was Martín Zubimendi. His profile fit as the ideal replacement, but with the Dutchman's performance, the Catalan club has decided to cancel all search and operations.
The main beneficiary has been Arsenal, who have completed the signing of Zubimendi by taking advantage of the change of plans at Camp Nou. Mikel Arteta had been interested in him for some time and didn't hesitate to move quickly when he saw the opportunity. The transfer is now practically official and from London they assure that they'll pay the release clause for the Real Sociedad player.
Barça redirects its planning
Zubimendi, who seemed like the ideal signing just a few months ago, has been left out of the blaugrana plans for sporting reasons. Flick believes that a major investment in that area of the field isn't necessary as long as De Jong keeps this level. With that in mind, the Barça sporting management has chosen to redirect its resources to other positions.
As a result, Barça loses a valuable option but gains clarity in its planning. The commitment to Frenkie de Jong is firm, and his possible renewal will be the next step. Meanwhile, Zubimendi becomes a star signing, but for a project different from Barça's.
